“Te Quiero, Te Adoro, Como La Vaca Al Toro.”

An old photograph of my Abuelito and Abuelita.

Today, my special àngel de la guarda celebrates another birthday in heaven…And I still don’t quite have the words to express my love and gratitude for this woman.

When I was growing up, my Abuelita embarked (once a year) on an 8-hour flight from Peru to America, just to help my mom take care of me. I still remember the telenovelas that would echo throughout the house, while the smell of her cooking lingered. I remember her infectious laugh, a trademark other than the saturated red lipstick she clung to. I’d often find Abuelita awake in the early hours of the morning, searching for something dulce for breakfast…Boy, did that woman have a sweet tooth!

Other than a common love of chocolate, I was also lucky enough to inherit Abuelita Isabel’s first name. I’m always trying to carry it as well as she did, yet I know that nothing I do will ever match the kindness she spread with every last breath that she took…She was a stranger to none and a true friend to all.

To the woman who taught me to never lose faith and always believe in happy endings,

I know you’re always with me

From the light in my stars

To the hope in my heart.

Feliz Cumpleaños en el cielo.

Te quiero, te adoro, como la vaca al toro.
